Events Alzheimer's Arkansas Walks - 2014
Is the theme for all the Alzheimer’s Arkansas Walks throughout the state this year, and we think it says what we’re all about. Too often, caregivers are overlooked when we talk about Alzheimer’s disease. More than 50% of caregivers pass away before the patient due to the stress of caregiving. They spend countless hours caring for their loved one and need support to help deal with this devastating disease.
In 2013, 15.5 million family and friends provided 17.7 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s care valued at $2.2 billion. 80% of care provided is by unpaid caregivers. In Arkansas, 172,000 family and friends provided 196 million hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s, care valued at $2,419 million.
More than 60% of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers rate the emotional stress of caregiving as high or very high; more than 1/3 reported symptoms of depression. Due to the physical and emotional toll of caregiver, Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers had $9.3 billion in additional health care costs of their own in 2013.
It’s never too early to get started on the Walk in your community. And one person, no matter the age really can make a difference. For example, a young man in one of the Walk communities is already hard at work galvanizing the local schools and organizing his peers to be involved in the 2014 Alzheimer’s Arkansas Walk. We are humbled by this young man and his steely determination to raise awareness and proceeds for Alzheimer’s Arkansas
The Walks are the backbone of this organization.
They help generate revenue for things like:
Walks are a place where people just have fun. They laugh with others and laughing has been shown to relieve stress. Whether you Walk along or join friends, family or co-workers and walk as a team, please know that YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! Many walk to honor or remember a colleague, friend or loved one affected by Alzheimer’s or one of the related dementias.
If you have never participated in one of our Walks, make it your goal to attend one in 2014. It is a great day of fun and one that you will remember for years to come.
Walks need people and we need you! For ways you can help your Arkansas friends and neighbors please contact Barbara Jensen at 501-224-0021 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
